About 2Henry’s
Quarter Horse
Ranch of
Hico,Texas

2Henry’s of Hico, LLC (2Henry’s Ranch) is located on State Highway 220, in the rolling Texas countryside just north of the town of Hico. Sitting on approximately 20 acres, 2Henry’s Of Hico (2Henry’s Ranch) is also affectionately known as the old “Miss Purdy Place,” a nod to local resident Jean Purdy. Miss Purdy had a well-known cutting horse ranch here, and in 1985 with help from “the hand” who lived in the barn, Bobby Kerr, won the AQHA Honor Roll Senior Cutting on her stallion Lucky Captain Jess. Now, our neighbor to the North, Bobby Kerr is an accomplished poet, he founded the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and was awarded Mustang Makeover Champion which he has now made a career of travelling the country with his wife Susan performing his award-winning NFR Specialty Act! It’s really kinda cool to have neighbors like that!

In Spring of 2018 the ranch was acquired by Mathew (Henry) and Chardean Gillispie and John (Henry) and Lisa Buehrle and we renamed the operation after Matt and John’s middle names “Henry” and 2Henry’s of Hico, LLC AKA, 2Henry’s Ranch was born!

How did we all start together? Long story-short; we all met awhile back over several bottles of wine and an interesting UBER ride! Honestly!! (You’ll really have to ask us about it sometime.) Out of our friendship and great chemistry; a home improvement business was started in Arizona, which turned into a horse business and ultimately our relocation to Texas. Because of our love of horses, (and desire to spend our children's inheritance,) we sold our homes and the ranch in Arizona to collectively live and work together on the new ranch in Texas. Each one of us brings a special quality to the business. While the ladies work “real paying” jobs, the two guys you’ll probably run into most are Matt and John. The whole team brings a diverse skill set to the business, we believe in making our approach to the business unique and forward-thinking.

Matt has 30 plus years in the equine industry. He is known as the “Rain Man” of the ranch! You may not know him, but he probably knows you! Horse breeds, stallions, mares, lineage, ranches, trainers...it doesn’t matter, he’s a walking encyclopedia of cutting. His diverse background includes VP of Corporate manufacturing and turn around management which gives us the ability to implement Six Sigma Lean Manufacturing knowledge to our all of businesses, which is priceless!

Chardean currently works from home full-time as a Driver Recruiter for Swift Transportation. While not currently riding, she was an avid barrel racer and pole bender in her day and her knowledge of riding and equine care is not to be ignored around here. Her current “ranch” responsibilities include, gardener, canine care - training and grooming, assistant cook/dishwasher, and part-time cat herder. Oh, she’s also mean on the grill too! Besides this fun stuff, professionally she worked over 20 years as an Account Manager in outside sales with Office Depot. She knows a lot of stuff!!

John has a very diverse business background as well. He grew up in rural Cresco, Iowa and spent some time in Wisconsin and Minnesota and is a proud Green Bay Packers shareholder. He’s the numbers guy here and a natural ideator; whose mind is continually bubbling with new ideas or suggesting a different approach to an old idea. You usually find him asking lots of questions trying to find out “why” something is being done the way it is. John has many years of sales, promotions, and customer service experience, most recently as Vice President for Chase Private Client Services (JPMorgan Chase) in Seattle and Scottsdale. He’s also worked in radio and television on air and in sales and management. John is also a US Army veteran with advanced training in journalism and public affairs/media relations.

Lisa is our World traveler. She works from home full-time in International Sales currently for large consumer products company. When she isn’t traveling she likes to spend her time riding her cutting horse “Kitty” and learning about cutting and competition. Her love for horses is apparent with her first morning walk-about, mid-day feeding and snacks, afternoon snuggles/watering and the evening night-checks. Nothing gets by her! Lisa’s expectations of daily care is always very clearly communicated and is second to none! Her most important responsibility of all though is FEEDING THE CREW! She is our resident Chef. This apple didn’t fall from the tree either as she takes after her mother Elaine from Montana, cooking up fabulous “always from-scratch” home-made meals that make restaurant outings almost seem like a complete rip-off!

Our horses boast some of the finest bloodlines available today. We focus on quality, not quantity, and our broodmares are own daughters of some of the industry’s top sires and dams making deep powerful linebreeding when matched with our stallion A Tale Of The Cat!

We research linebreeding and crosses which increase the chances for high performance/high earning offspring. Our foals are sold completely fit and ready to go to the next level. We don’t only have horses!! 2Henry’s Ranch is also home to: “Her Cowness” Henrietta, our spoiled diva longhorn!

A Tale of the Cat (barn name: Torch)

A Tale Of The Cat (High Brow Cat x Autumn Boon). Barn name: TORCH!, he’s nothing but HOT with his dark chestnut coat and firey red mane! He’s currently the #3 earning offspring of Autumn Boon with over $120,000 in earnings!

A Tale Of The Cat was originally trained and shown by Open Hall of Famer Jason Clark for owner Robert Charles Brown who purchased the stallion as a two-year old. A Tale Of The Cat with Jason on-board were the favorite to win the 2014 NCHA Futurity Open but, after the semi-finals the stallion started to show signs of colic and the rush was on to stabilize him. Even though this occurred, the two finished 7th and in 2015 went on to compete at a high level competing in events such as the Summer Spectacular, Breeders Invitational and Cotton Stakes. An ownership change side-lined the stud somewhat early in his show career until ATOC Partners, LLC acquired him in February, 2019. He had limited private breedings 2016 through 2018 and was offered to the public for the first time in 2019.

See him again soon with our partner and cutting horse legend Randy Chartier of Randy Chartier Cutting Horses ; the ranch where A Tale Of The Cat calls home most of the year. A Tale Of The Cat possesses stunning color and conformation, amazing athletic ability, and the mind and disposition of a true champion. His parentage is strong, yet his linebreeding is light which makes him a powerful candidate for any non-Herda carrying mare in any discipline! Let us check out the linebreeding for you if you’d like, we’re confident that THE FINEST STALLION will produce the FINEST performance horses. Whether you are looking for a horse that excels in cutting, reining, working cow horse, roping, barrels or any other discipline, we are sure that Torch is the sire for you!

ATOC Partnership

A Tale Of The Cat (TORCH!) is owned by ATOC Partners, LLC a Texas Corporation. This partnership is managed by 2Henry’s of Hico, LLC and co-owned with Randy and Kelle Chartier.

Randy Chartier

We’re also are proud to be in partnership with well-respected cutting horse guru Randy Chartier and his wife Kelle. Randy has been involved in every facet of the cutting horse industry from the youth, to a non-professional, to being an open trainer. He has also been an NCHA judge for over 25 years. Randy has amassed a number of accomplishments in the NCHA and of these he was a Non-Pro World Champion, Open World Champion, Non-Pro Futurity Champion, and is part of the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame. We have been humbled to have him showing Torch in 2019 and cannot wait to see how they do in 2020! (To see Torch in action click here) Randy is known as “Pops” to friends and family but, honestly, he’s more like the “Archie Manning” of cutting! All three of his sons RL, Cullen and Scott are NCHA money earning riders with RL and Cullen making it their full-time careers. And let’s not forget mom, Kelle who’s almost hit 1M in NCHA earnings!

It all makes sense when you know the history behind this family beginning with Patriarch ML Chartier and his purchase of Dry Doc in March of 1971, with he and Buster Welch winning the 1971 NCHA Futurity. Dry Doc was one of the most influential cutting horse sires in history. He was a full brother to Doc O Lena and the second of ONLY TWO FOALS of Poco Lena.
